Pressing Social Issues: Gender Inequality and Sexual Orientation

The history of gender inequality has been very, very slow in making progress.  Mankind has made leaps and bounds with science, technology, space travel, and much more.  Yet we have barely made progress when it comes to the way that males and females are treated.  Yes it is true that some progress has been made, but the ever present stereotypes are still prevalent, and the glass ceiling is just as present as ever.  Overall, women are still treated as if they are weaker, less intelligent, incapable of making sound decisions, emotional, and much more.

These tie into an equally tragic issue, the fact that many do not see individuals other than heterosexuals as equals.  Women who are not heterosexual have extra issues to contend with.  Not only are they usually given less preferential treatment, they have to deal with the negative stereotypes that many unjustly place on them.  Men have it just as bad in this regard.  For me, the bottom line is this, how does another person’s relationship status really affect your life or my life?  Well, it doesn't!  Some say that it will break down morals and values.  Let me get this straight, many ‘heterosexual’ men and women can watch pornography hang out at strip clubs, cheat on their spouses, lie, cheat, steal, and do many other immoral acts.  Yet is a man is in a very loving and committed respectful relationship with another man then the world will come to an end?  I am not by any means saying that everyone has to agree with it, but that does not mean that they should not respect people regardless.  I saw a post online once that said something to the effect of “you don’t like gay marriage?  Don’t have one”.  It really sums it up very nice.  How does it really impact a person’s life in any sort of real or threatening way?  I truly hope that things will turn around, and that people will see that being homosexual, transgender  bisexual, or any other sexual orientation does not and should not mean that any person is better or worse than the next solely based on their sexuality.  Not all is lost, I found an article published in The Huffington Post which protects players, as well as allows players to fully live out who they are in public (just like all the rest of us can, yet we often take for granted that we can do things like talk about what we did over the weekend etc.).   American baseball has an anti-discriminatory clause for baseball players; this is the greatest thing….. well, since apple pie and baseball.  Pun slightly intended.  Here is the article:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/23/major-league-baseball-discrimination_n_1110059.html
I know that this may upset some people, but I really do not think that it should.  There is a beautiful quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.  “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”.  This can be applied to many situations, including disabilities, sexual orientation, religion, etc.  If there is one thing that I hope that people can take away from my blog in general is this, take the time to see a person for who they are, heart and soul, not for how you think they should be.  We are all running the same rat race, and we all have hopes, dreams, and feelings.
